The Jamaica Wine House, St Michael’s Alley, E3

Jamaica Wine HouseRelax in this odd-looking terra cotta pub, which started life in 1652 as a coffee house, London’s first, in fact.

In the seventeenth century, much of the business of the day was conducted in coffee houses – which is how insurance giant Lloyd’s began – and the businesslike attitude is reflected in the severe bare boards-and-benches interior. It’s recently reopened after renovation.

The Jamaica became the drinking den in which Robbie Ross (Michael Sheen) comforts John Gray (Ioan Gruffudd) after he's been dumped by the great writer in Wilde.

Wilde (1998, dir: Brian Gilbert)
