Shepherd’s Tavern, 50 Shepherd Street, W1
In Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright, Eve Gill (Jane Wyman) downs a brandy with DI Wilfred ‘Ordinary’ Smith (Michael Wilding) in Shepherd’s Tavern, Shepherd Street at the corner of Hertford Street. The old fashioned Mayfair pub is pretty much unchanged.
The house of ‘The Laziest Gal in Town’, glamorous actress Charlotte Inwood (Marlene Dietrich) – and site of the murder – stood nearby at 78 Hertford Street, but was demolished to make way for the Hilton hotel. If you remember the film, you may recognise the remaining section of street near the corner of Stanhope Row.
Trivia: another 1950s Hitchcock location was demolished to make way for the Hilton. Park Lane House was the ‘embassy’ in which Jo McKenna (Doris Day) entertains the party in the 1956 version of The Man Who Knew Too Much.
