2 Ladbroke Road, Notting Hill, W11

The Red ShoesIn Powell-Pressburger's classic The Red Shoes (a film cited by Martin Scorsese as a major influence on Raging Bull), Choreographer Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) sees Vicky Page (Moira Shearer) dancing Odette from Swan Lake (to gramophone records) at the Mercury Theatre, a converted chapel in Notting Hill. Converted to a theatre in 1933, this tiny 150-seater was indeed the birthplace of the Ballet Rambert. It's now a private house.

Trivia: the first performance of TS Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral was held at the Mercury, and in July 1968, the Beatles did a photoshoot in the theatre.
