S&M Cafe, 4-6 Essex Road, N1

S&M Cafe, Islington Calm down, now. That’s S&M as in Sausage & Mash. This 50s-style cafe is the real thing. It used to be Alfredo’s, but after being closed for a number of years, it’s finally back and – even better – has kept its retro greasy spoon ambience. The period look of cafe made it ideal for the Sixties London hangout of Jimmy and the Mods in Quadrophenia.

It played a similar role as ‘Luigi’s’ coffee bar in the well-cast, but disappointingly stagy, adaptation of Jez Butterworth’s Fifties-set Mojo.

And where else in London can you get a decent Dandelion and Burdock with your meal?.
