Plender Street, Camden Town, NW1
Plender Street was the site of ‘Ambrose Chapel’, the taxidermist where Ben McKenna (James Stewart) follows a red herring in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 remake of his own The Man Who Knew Too Much.
The taxidermist was real and, unusually for Hitch, was used for both exteriors and interiors. Gerrard Family Taxidermists supplied stuffed animals to Hollywood studios. It's long gone, of course, but you’ll recognise the junction of Plender and Royal College Streets from the film.
Trivia: 8 Royal College Street, seen in the background as Stewart gets out of the taxi, was, in 1873, home to poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewlis in Agnieszka Holland’s 1995 film of Christopher Hampton’s play Total Eclipse.
