Copenhagen Tunnel, NW1

Copenhagen TunnelFrom the car park at the end of Vale Royal, a cul-de-sac running east from York Way, you can see the arched brick entrance to the Copenhagen Tunnel, the spot behind Mrs Wilberforce’s house where Alec Guinness’ ill-assorted gang of crooks dump bodies onto passing railway trucks in 1955 Ealing classic The Ladykillers.

Mrs Wilberforce’s house itself was constructed on Frederica Street, another cul-de-sac, facing Pentonville Prison. The quirky set, built without a single right-angle, filled the western end of the road, which has since been completely redeveloped.

In the film, the house seems to look north to St Pancras Station, which would plonk it bang in the middle of Argyle Street.
