Australia House, Strand, WC2

Australia HouseAt the eastern end of the traffic island where Aldwych meets the Strand stands the home of the Australian High Commission since 1918. The imposing Exhibition Hall of Australia House, with its chandeliers and columns of Australian marble, became ‘Gringott’s Bank’, the wizard bank staffed by clever – if unfriendly – goblins, where Harry is taken by Hagrid to make a withdrawal, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It is not generally open to the public, unless you're applying for a visa to visit Australia.

Trivia: the site of Australia House was previously covered by notorious slums, mentioned by Charles Dickens in Bleak House.
