Aubrey House, 7 Maida Avenue, W2

Maida Vale7 Maida Avenue, was ‘Kipling Mansions’, the home of unfortunate animal lover Ken Pile (Michael Palin), where psycho Otto (Kevin Kline) is beastly to the little fish (or insects, as he likes to think of them), in A Fish Called Wanda.

Next door, Douglas House, 6 Maida Avenue, was the house where Judy Geeson, puts up Chicago cop John Wayne after his digs are blown up in Brannigan. Itís here that a potential assassin mistakes Geeson for Wayne. Iíll run that by you again ñ Judy Geeson (27, female) is mistaken for John Wayne (68, male, six foot four). Well sheís wearing his hat, you see.

A little further down the road, between numbers 15 and 22, is the rear of St Maryís Church, where James Leamington (James Mason) finally proposes to Georgy (Lynn Redgrave) at the end of Silvio Narizzano’s breezily cynical Sixties comedy Georgy Girl.

Staying with Georgy Girl, on Maida Avenue, toward Edgware Road, the tiny alleyway by the red postbox leads to the entrance of the flat shared by Georgy and Meredith (Charlotte Rampling). It’s actually the rear of 449 Edgware Road. Unchanged up to the mid-Nineties, an ugly red brick extension to the Chinese restaurant next door has all but obscured the iron staircase up and down which Georgy and Meredith clanked.

Trivia: A blue plaque records that 2 Maida Avenue was the real-life home of Arthur Lowe. A respected television and film actor, Lowe is probably most fondly remembered as the pompous Captain Mainwaring in UK TVís classic comedy series Dadís Army, brought to the big screen in 1971.
