Adelphi Building, 1-11 John Adam Street, WC2
Adelphi Terrace was an ambitious, but financially shaky, 18th-century riverside development by Robert and John Adam (adelphi is Greek for ‘brothers’). It was demolished in 1936, but its name lives on in the Adelphi Theatre on the Strand, and in the Adelphi Building, south of the Strand.
This is the deco ‘hotel’ to which Tom Jericho (Dougray Scott) is led by the mysterious phone call in Michael Apted’s film of Robert Harris’s Enigma. Of course, it’s not a hotel at all. It’s behind the Adelphi that Joseph Fiennes reveals a sinister violent streak after catching a mugger in Kaige Chen’s erotic thriller Killing Me Softly.
