Ironmonger Row Baths, 1-11 Ironmonger Row, EC1
Built as a public wash-house in 1931, the Grade II-listed Ironmonger Row Baths, 1-11 Ironmonger Row, is the Turkish Bath to which Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen) is enticed in David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises.
For practical reasons – real steam isn’t the best environment for expensive movie cameras – the interior, where he bloodily fights off two assassins (which was to have been the famous Porchester Hall Baths in Bayswater), was recreated in the studio. So the Turkish baths on the premises won't look much like the baths in the film. The upside is, you can enjoy that body scrub and massage without having to fight off lethal Russian assassins.
Trivia: the real Porchester Hall baths can be seen in Quadrophenia.
