Coronet Street, Hoxton, N1

The Crying Game, Metro BarAn empty building on the cobbled Coronet Street at the corner of Boot Street, behind the hideous new Holiday Inn, is the exterior of the fictitious ‘Metro Bar’ in The Crying Game.

After being left untouched for several years, the painted ‘Metro’ sign, added for the film, has finally disappeared.

The interior was provided by famous gay bar The London Apprentice at 333 Old Street. It’s since been given a serious revamp and reopened as the (straight) 333 Mother, the club visited by Minnie Driver and Mary McCormack in High Heels And Low Lifes.

Around the corner is Hoxton Square, which a couple of years ago we were constantly being informed was the coolest place on the planet. Ahead of the trends, 9 Hoxton Square is the flat of Dil, where the goldfish meet a sad end on the pavement.
