Leadenhall Market, EC3
On the south side of Leadenhall, in the shadow of the unmistakable Lloyds Building, is Leadenhall Market, on the site of an ancient poultry market. The brightly painted, wrought iron cruciform arcade, which dates from the 1880s, is a natural for the screen. In Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Lara (Angelina Jolie) zooms through the market on her way back from the auction house. The extremely photogenic market was also seen in Nick Willing’s thriller Doctor Sleep, with Goran Visnjic and Paddy Considine. Journalism student Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood) meets up with his dad here as he gets sucked into the rituals of football hooliganism in Green Street.
Pizza Express, on the central hub, was once ‘Saigon Times’, the Thai restaurant where hostage-negotiator Russell Crowe is assigned to the Latin American case, in Taylor Hackford’s Proof of Life. Diagonally opposite, The Lamb pub is the site of the bar brawl in John Wayne’s only English movie, Brannigan. Tracking down villain Drexel (Del Henney), Brannigan (Wayne) and Sir Charles Swann (Richard Attenborough) kick off one of those brawls only ever seen in the movies, where everyone in the bar punches out everyone else.
