Kingsway Tram Tunnel, Kingsway, WC1

A little to the north of Holborn tube station, in the middle of Kingsway, you can see the gaping, though now gated, northern entrance to the abandoned Kingsway Tram Tunnel, which apparently led into the ‘Ministry’ in Jeremiah Chechik’s disastrous film of The Avengers.

Computer trickery moved the tunnel to disappear under the Thames opposite Greenwich. In reality, it runs beneath Kingsway and emerged on the Embankment, under the arch of Waterloo Bridge. It has lain unused since the last tram ran in 1952 and its future use is uncertain.
